There Are No Crimes of the Mind Until They Become Harmful Action

ACTION IS ALWAYS A CHOICE

As time moves forward many have become convinced that the mere act of thinking something deemed taboo is sufficient to condemn. As a result, an increasing percentage of our society is quickly becoming fearful of expressing their beliefs out of a desperate desire not to have those beliefs obliterate their friendships, prospects, careers or even lives.

Belief is fundamentally not a form of aggression. There are no crimes of the mind. The creation of such a concept hurdles us down a path leading towards an Orwellian nightmare. Even the most harmful belief cannot cause any true harm unless it becomes action. Punishing an individual for a crime they have not yet chosen to execute is a form of tyranny.

By suppressing freedom of thought we isolate those thoughts from being subject to meaningful discourse. In the case of thoughts which tend to lead the thinker towards harmful action, this means that the thinker has fewer opportunities to evaluate and understand the consequences of what they are considering. Furthermore, by suppressing thoughts as taboo we also suppress many potentially wonderful ideas which could lead to tremendously positive actions that are both beneficial to the thinker and others.

The suppression of belief only really succeeds in suppressing the individual which is only relevant when an attempt is being made to indoctrinate. In order for a free society to prosper, we must continually resist the rise of ideological indoctrination as it always threatens a return to widespread suffering.

What you believe should never be a crime. How you choose to act based on your beliefs may be harmful but until action is taken it is merely conjecture to presume it will become action. Never raise the pitchforks to suppress belief as it is a sure formula for radicalization.
